Earl Sweatshirt and MIKE Announce Collaborative Album 'Pompeii // Utility' with Surf Gang
Earl Sweatshirt and MIKE are joining forces for a collaborative album, Pompeii // Utility, featuring production from Surf Gang. The first single, "Leadbelly," is out now.
Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, and production collective Surf Gang have unleashed their new single, “Leadbelly,” signaling the arrival of their highly anticipated collaborative LP, Pompeii // Utility, slated for release on April 3 via 10k/Tan Cressida/Surf Gang Records.
The album is structured as a double record, with Pompeii showcasing tracks primarily led by MIKE, while Utility highlights Sweatshirt’s contributions. Both artists collaborated closely with Surf Gang members Harrison, evilgiane, Elipropperr, and Flea Diamonds throughout the project. This collaboration builds upon the strong connection forged between MIKE and Sweatshirt since they first toured together in 2019.
“I relate to MIKE like my actual sibling,” Sweatshirt recently shared with The Face. “That’s the foundation that made it easy for the project to come together.”
MIKE echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’ve been working toward the same thing for a long time. It was already there.”
The duo will embark on their Home on the Range tour in June to support the album’s release. Before the tour kicks off, they'll team up with Surf Gang for three secret shows in Los Angeles, New York City, and London.
Last year, Sweatshirt surprised fans with the release of Live Laugh Love. This project followed his 2022 album Sick! and 2023’s Voir Dire, a collaborative effort with The Alchemist.
Meanwhile, MIKE released Pinball II last May, a follow-up to his album Pinball. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2024, MIKE expressed his desire to consistently release new music. “I’m trying to flood the streets, bro,” he said. “I’m trying to keep dropping. I can’t lie. I’m in a mode right now. I’m trying to fuck shit up, and I’m trying to see all my homies fuck shit up. So that’s my main shit right there. World takeover. But, nah, for real. Just trying to give my life back to this shit.”
