The music world is mourning the loss of Jack Douglas, a producer and engineer whose touch defined numerous classic albums. He passed away on Monday at the age of 80, according to reports from Variety. At this time, the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Douglas's journey began in New York, where he was among the first graduates of the Institute Of Audio Research. His entry into the music industry was as a janitor at the iconic Record Plant studios in New York. His early work included engineering for Billy Joel's demos and tracks by The Who that later appeared on their 1971 album, Who's Next. In that same pivotal year, Douglas also served as an engineer on John Lennon's masterpiece, Imagine.

At the Record Plant, Douglas honed his skills, engineering classic records for the New York Dolls and Blue Öyster Cult. He earned his first production credit on Alice Cooper's 1973 album, Muscle Of Love, before beginning his long association with Aerosmith starting with their 1974 debut, Get Your Wings. Douglas went on to produce Aerosmith's monumental albums Toys In The Attic, Rocks, and Draw The Line. Their collaboration continued years later with 2004's Honkin' On Bobo. Beyond Aerosmith, Douglas's production or co-production credits include landmark albums like the Patti Smith Group's Radio Ethiopia, Cheap Trick's self-titled album, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy. He appeared on Billy Corgan's podcast a few months ago.
