Jack White Clarifies Taylor Swift Comments After Online Backlash
Jack White took to social media to address a quote that went viral, clarifying his stance on Taylor Swift's songwriting after some interpreted his comments as critical.

Despite recent headlines, Jack White has stated he doesn't find Taylor Swift's music "boring."
On Monday, March 9th, White posted a message on his Instagram, clarifying his statements. He noted the post would be temporary. "I didn’t say I think Taylor Swift’s music is ‘boring,'” White stated, addressing the online reaction.
The statement followed a The Guardian interview where White discussed songwriting styles. When asked about autobiographical elements in his music, he contrasted his approach with that of pop singers like Swift, who often write about their personal relationships. He admitted in the interview that he doesn't find that style of songwriting particularly interesting.
The internet responded swiftly. Publications highlighted the quote, suggesting White was "throwing shade" at Swift. Commentary pieces emerged, and Swift's fans defended her work. Some critics pointed out the irony, given that White's music has also drawn from personal experiences, including his divorce from Karen Elson. Others noted the timing of the comments, which coincided with International Women’s Day.
In his Instagram post, White clarified that his comments were about his own disinterest in writing about himself, stating he finds writing about imaginary characters more attractive. He acknowledged Swift's success and the success of similar songwriters and said he is "very happy for them that they’ve succeeded in engaging with so many music lovers in their own way."
White then shifted his focus to journalism.
"These are the times where I’m made less and less interested in doing interviews," he stated, criticizing the media's focus on creating drama for clicks.
He expressed concern that his words are often taken out of context to generate page views, making him hesitant to share his thoughts with "any sort of romance or passion or reflection."
Hopefully, White’s explanation has quelled the perceived conflict between the two artists.
