JPEGMAFIA's 'Experimental Rap' Arrives Amidst Self-Made Backlash – And It's Good
JPEGMAFIA's new album, Experimental Rap, has arrived, defying the backlash he seemed to be courting. Despite controversial collaborations and a feud with Earl Sweatshirt, the album delivers his signature chaotic sound.

In recent weeks, the anticipation surrounding JPEGMAFIA has been intertwined with a self-inflicted backlash. It almost seems as though he was provoking it. His music is intentionally jarring, his persona unapologetically self-assured. Recent production credits for major artists like Kanye West and BTS – collaborators who polarize for vastly different reasons – coupled with the audacity to title his new album Experimental Rap, further fueled the flames. A public spat with Earl Sweatshirt on Instagram threatened to overshadow the release. But Experimental Rap is finally here, and it's a compelling listen. The backlash might just have to wait.
JPEGMAFIA opted not to provide advance copies of Experimental Rap to critics. He has previously expressed a desire for certain publications to cease covering him. While Stereogum doesn't fall under that umbrella, we did share early tracks like "babygirl," "War Over Land," and "¥ (Yen)." Now, the full album is unleashed, and it's a sonic rollercoaster.
One could argue that Experimental Rap isn't truly experimental, but rather JPEGMAFIA doubling down on his established style – a sound he's cultivated since his early days in Baltimore warehouses. Yet, no one else crafts music quite like this: a noisy, abrasive, sample-heavy blend of rap that's brimming with swagger, personality, and unpredictable flair. On the first listen, the album feels overwhelming, demanding multiple listens to fully unpack. The samples are a standout, with heavy doses of gospel and guitar, including a chopped-up reimagining of Kanye West's "All Of The Lights."
Experimental Rap is almost entirely self-produced, packed with intricate allusions and complex lyrics that require repeated listens to fully grasp. It’s an immersive experience. On first impression, it's easy to get swept up in the chaos. He truly is the king of making crunchy ass music and wearing muay thai shorts. Listen for yourself below.
Experimental Rap is out now on AWAL.
