Lauryn Hill Reveals the Real Reasons Behind Her 25-Year Album Hiatus

Lauryn Hill Reveals the Real Reasons Behind Her 25-Year Album Hiatus

It's been nearly three decades since Lauryn Hill dropped her critically acclaimed debut album in 1998, featuring iconic singles like ‘Everything Is Everything’, ‘Ex-Factor’, and ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’. Despite the album's monumental success, a second record never materialized. Now, the singer has shared insights into her decision via Instagram, attributing it to burnout and the struggle to maintain artistic integrity within the industry.

"When you’re inspired and desire to be principled, what doesn’t get talked about enough is the drain… nor the challenge to find safety so that you can create with integrity," she explained, highlighting the pressures of the music business. She emphasized that true art shouldn't be solely driven by financial gain.

"Most see opportunity as dollars only and often exclude the ‘sense’. ‘The Score’ [Fugees 1996 album] nor the ‘Miseducation’ were made because we were ‘allowed’ to represent what we did, we fought for every inch,” she said. “Wild success can cause greed that begins to denegrate the art for the money.”

Hill further elaborated on the creative process, stating that "artists go through phases, creativity requires expression, exploration and experimentation." Drawing a parallel to Harriet Tubman, she suggested her efforts to speak truth to power faced similar resistance.

"I was like a Harriet Tubman figure in some respects running to speak difficult truths to power before certain forces tried to close those doors," she shared. "If it was so easy to do, where is that expression now on the world stage? Systems fear what they can’t control. Creativity is most potent when it’s free.”

Reflecting on her lasting impact, Hill stated, "If I did nothing else, I introduced standards and possibilities to a generation that didn’t know they could operate on that level before then... I am often doing things outside the support of the system before people can even realise what I’ve done."

These recent comments echo sentiments from a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone, where she revealed her label never actively pursued a follow-up album. She described facing "scores of tentacled obstructionists, politics, repressing agendas, unrealistic expectations and saboteurs EVERYWHERE" after the success of 'Miseducation.'

Beyond her solo work, Lauryn Hill remains active. In March, she announced the Diaspora Calling! Festival at the Milton Keynes National Bowl, featuring Wyclef Jean and her sons, YG Marley and Zion Marley (grandchildren of reggae legend Bob Marley). Diaspora Calling!, which began in 2016, has previously hosted artists like Nas, Kehlani, Noname, and Little Simz.
