Lizzo Announces Bold New Album 'Bitch,' Embraces Empowerment Through Language

Lizzo is gearing up to release her highly anticipated third album, Bitch. Scheduled for release on June 5th, the 12-track LP will feature her previously released single “Don’t Make Me Love U.” The title track is slated to drop on May 1st. Fans can anticipate a collection of songs with quintessential Lizzo titles such as “That GRRRL” and “Happy 2 Be.”
In a statement, Lizzo shared the inspiration behind the album's provocative title: “Reclaiming the word Bitch is power—it’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love,” adding, “It was only fitting to name my album Bitch because it has become my favorite word when using it on my own terms and because I am 100% that bitch!”
Bitch marks Lizzo’s first full-length release since 2022's Special. The album follows the scrapped project, Love in Real Life, which was shelved after the singles “Still Bad” and the title track failed to gain traction. In an interview with New York, Lizzo described “Still Bad” as “overproduced” and credited a pivotal meeting with her label for the shift in creative direction, leading to her fiery summer 2025 rap mixtape My Face Hurts From Smiling.
Last June, Lizzo offered insights into the then-untitled album to Rolling Stone, defining it as “my pop, rock, rap genre of music. It’s a little moodier, it’s a little darker. It talks about the dark times.” These "dark times" likely allude to the lawsuits Lizzo faced in 2023 from former backup dancers, and a separate suit filed by a former tour employee, which she was dropped from in December 2024.
Beyond music, Lizzo is also set to star in the upcoming biopic Rosetta, portraying Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the iconic singer known as the godmother of rock’n’roll.
