Lorde Declares Independence: Singer Reflects on Leaving Universal Music Group
Lorde announces her departure from Universal Music Group after her initial deal, signed at age 12, concluded in December, marking a new chapter in her career.

Lorde is embarking on a fresh chapter in her career, now operating as a fully independent artist. In a series of intimate voice memos shared with fans on Wednesday, the New Zealand singer revealed that her long-standing deal with Universal Music Group (UMG), initially inked when she was just 12 years old, officially ended in December.
"I adore them, they’re incredible people, and I have had an amazing experience with them," she expressed, acknowledging her time with UMG. "But the truth is that a 12-year-old girl pre-signed and pre-sold her creative output before she knew what it would be like and before she knew what she was signing away."
Lorde hinted at the possibility of future collaborations with record labels, stating that she'll likely sign a deal again sometime in the future—which “could well be with Universal”—but that she “needed to take a second to have nothing being bought or sold that comes from me.”
"When I see an opportunity for a clean slate I take it," she added. "And it does feel different. It sounds like it wouldn’t but it really does. I feel a feeling of openness and possibility and am inspired."
Currently on the road for her Ultrasound World Tour, Lorde also shared glimpses into her recent activities, which include delving into "bizarre fucking books" and engaging in chess matches with Addison Rae.
