Over the weekend, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan took to Instagram to express his support for General Randy George, a former classmate from West Point Academy. This came after the four-star general was reportedly asked to retire early by Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth, a move that has stirred controversy.

The decorated Army Chief of Staff's ouster amidst ongoing tensions has raised eyebrows. One military observer described the situation to Axios as "insane," highlighting the potential disruption during a sensitive time.

Keenan shared images from his time at West Point with George, reflecting on their shared experiences at the prestigious military academy. He recounted his initial aspirations as an artist and the practical considerations that led him to the Army.

"My family were living on a teachers salary. Not much left over after bills. Grants and student loans weren’t going to cover it. So I joined the Army to take advantage of the Army College Fund. And as it turns out, I excelled in the military. Not what I was expecting,” Keenan wrote, detailing his path in the early 1980s. He was eventually chosen to attend U.S.M.A.P.S. and apply to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.

Ultimately, Keenan declined the appointment, a decision that was met with mixed reactions. He noted that George was among the supportive classmates who respected his choice.

Keenan acknowledged George's distinguished military career, culminating in his role as a four-star general and U.S. Army Chief of Staff. Expressing empathy for his early retirement, Keenan extended his support, suggesting a get-together over beers.

According to Reuters, the Pentagon confirmed George's retirement without providing a specific reason. This decision arrives as thousands of soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division are deployed to the Middle East. Despite no reported friction between Hegseth and George, this move follows a series of firings of senior military officers.

In his farewell email, George emphasized the importance of "courageous leaders of character" for U.S. soldiers, as reported by CBS News. He urged his colleagues to remain focused on their mission and to prioritize the needs of the warfighters.
