Miley Cyrus Defends "Flowers" Against Bruno Mars Songwriting Lawsuit, Plus Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special
Miley Cyrus is battling a lawsuit over similarities between her hit "Flowers" and Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man," while also celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hannah Montana.

In 2023, Miley Cyrus had a massive comeback with "Flowers," a song widely perceived as a response to Bruno Mars' earlier hit, "When I Was Your Man." Now, Cyrus faces a lawsuit, not from Mars himself, but from Tempo Music Investments, who own the catalog of Mars' collaborator Philip Lawrence, alleging similarities between the two tracks.
Having previously been denied a dismissal, Cyrus' legal team is now arguing that the lawsuit is baseless because the elements in question are common tropes in breakup songs.
According to Billboard, Miley Cyrus' lawyers filed a motion asserting the songs are "very different," offering distinct perspectives and musical styles. Cyrus' attorney, Peter Anderson, stated:
> Man, a slow piano ballad, is a breakup song from the perspective of a man who regrets not doing various things he believes could have saved his relationship. On the other hand, Flowers, an upbeat, danceable pop song, is a breakup song from the perspective of a woman rejoicing in her independence and self-reliance.
Furthermore, Cyrus' legal team invokes the fair-use doctrine, suggesting that "Flowers" could be interpreted as a commentary on "When I Was Your Man." They argue that even if similarities exist, "Flowers"' upbeat lyrics are perceived as responding to Man's despondent ones.
While the legal battle continues, Miley Cyrus is also commemorating a significant milestone: the 20th anniversary of Hannah Montana, the Disney Channel series that launched her to stardom.
The Hannah Montana 20th anniversary special will be available on Disney+ starting March 24th. Reports from the New York Post indicate Cyrus has been seen filming in Malibu, sporting the iconic blonde Hannah wig.
