Moana Rides Again: First Look at the Live-Action Remake with Catherine Lagaʻaia and Dwayne Johnson

Moana is ready to set sail once more!

On Monday, Disney released a new trailer and poster for the live-action remake of Moana, the beloved 2016 animated film featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda. This time, 19-year-old Catherine Lagaʻaia takes on the role of Moana, while Dwayne Johnson returns as the shapeshifting demigod, Maui.

The trailer showcases Moana's Gramma Tala explaining her granddaughter's mission to save her island by finding Maui. We also get a sneak peek at Lagaʻaia’s rendition of “How Far I’ll Go,” and her take on the iconic “I am Moana!” battle cry.

The new Moana film, hitting theaters on July 10, will feature original songs by Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, with Mancina also composing the score. The original Moana soundtrack reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Kid Albums and Soundtracks charts. Two songs, “How Far I’ll Go” (No. 41 peak) and “You’re Welcome” (No. 65), charted on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Johnson’s Billboard debut.

The live-action remake is directed by Thomas Kail, known for his Emmy and Tony-winning work on Hamilton. Johnson and Miranda are producing alongside Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, and Hiram Garcia. Executive producers include Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, and Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films.
