Neil Young Makes Surprise Appearance at David Suzuki Benefit Concert
Neil Young surprised fans with a rare live performance at a benefit concert honoring David Suzuki's 90th birthday in Vancouver, marking his first appearance of 2026.

Neil Young delighted attendees with an unexpected acoustic set at a Vancouver benefit concert celebrating the 90th birthday of Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki. This marked his first live performance of 2026, held at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
Young performed two solo acoustic numbers: "Heart of Gold" on guitar, followed by "After the Gold Rush" on piano, enhanced with harmonica. This appearance was his first since the Painted Turtle benefit show on October 25, 2025, and follows the cancellation of his 2026 European tour dates.
Other notable figures at the Suzuki birthday event included Jane Fonda, Al Gore, Sarah McLachlan, Bruce Cockburn, and Chantal Kreviazuk. The concert successfully raised funds for the David Suzuki Foundation.
The surprise performance occurred after Young's abrupt cancellation of his planned European tour in February, citing no specific reason. He reassured fans that he was "listening to my body."
Despite his absence from touring, Young has been creatively active. He recently finished a new studio album, Second Song, recorded with the Chrome Hearts at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studios in Malibu, featuring unheard songs from 1964. Additionally, a new live album with the Chrome Hearts, As Time Explodes, is scheduled for release on May 29.
Young’s only solo Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 remains “Heart of Gold,” which topped the chart on March 18, 1972, from his landmark album Harvest. “After the Gold Rush” is the title track from his acclaimed 1970 album of the same name.
