Remembering Greg Brown: The Guitarist Who Fueled Cake's Iconic Sound
Greg Brown, co-founder and original guitarist of the alternative rock band Cake, has passed away at 55. His contributions shaped the band's early sound and success.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Greg Brown, the original guitarist and co-founding member of the seminal 90s alt-rock band Cake. The band shared a heartfelt statement on social media, noting that Brown died “after a brief illness.” He was 55.
“Greg was an integral part of CAKE’s early sound and development,” the band’s statement continued. “His creative contributions were immense, and his presence—both musical and personal—will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Greg.”
Brown helped found Cake in 1991 alongside singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, drummer Frank French, and bassist Shon Meckfessel. During those formative years, Brown co-wrote the band’s first two albums—1994’s Motorcade of Generosity and 1996’s Fashion Nugget—laying down his signature guitar and organ work. His style was characterized by a sharp, jagged approach that blended blues-rock intuition with a distinctive country swagger.

Brown's most enduring contribution to Cake's legacy is undoubtedly “The Distance,” a track he solely penned. The single became a massive hit, rocketing up the Billboard charts and peaking at No. 4 on Alternative Airplay. His bandmates, especially McCrea, immediately recognized the track's potential. In a 2021 Billboard interview, Brown recounted McCrea’s reaction: “He took to it right away, and I didn’t really understand what he saw in it so much. I liked the way it sounded and everything, but I thought ‘Frank Sinatra’ was a much stronger choice for the single. But the record label chose it and it worked out.”
Before the recording of Prolonging the Magic in 1998, Brown and bassist Victor Damiani both departed from Cake. Reflecting on this period, Brown told Billboard in 2021, “I would just say there was a lot of turmoil at the time.” Following his exit, Brown formed the band Deathray with Damiani. He also collaborated with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer in the short-lived project Homie and with Matt Sharp on the Puckett’s Versus the Country Boy EP. Brown briefly reunited with Cake on 2011’s Showroom of Compassion, contributing guitar to the track “Bound Away.” In 2023, he released The End of Something New, his first and only solo EP.
