Shakira Draws 2 Million Fans to Historic Copacabana Beach Concert in Rio

Shakira brought her electrifying energy to Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night (May 2), delivering a free concert that drew an astounding crowd of 2 million people, according to the city's mayor. The iconic waterfront transformed into a massive dance floor as fans gathered to witness the Colombian superstar's performance.

The show followed similar record-breaking performances by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga the previous year, solidifying Copacabana Beach as a prime destination for large-scale concerts. This performance was part of Shakira's 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' (Women No Longer Cry) world tour, named after her 2024 album.

The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as fans eagerly awaited Shakira's arrival. Around 11 p.m., the stage ignited, and the crowd erupted in cheers as skywriting drones painted the message "I love you Brazil" in Portuguese across the night sky.

Addressing the massive audience, Shakira reminisced about her first visit to Brazil three decades ago.

"I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you," Shakira shared. "And now look at this. Life is magical."

The setlist was a vibrant mix of beloved hits, including "Hips Don’t Lie," "La Tortura," and "La Bicicleta." She closed the night with "BZRP Music Sessions #53/66," a song that resonated deeply with fans following her separation from Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué.

Throughout the show, Shakira emphasized the strength and resilience of women. "Us women, every time we fall we get up a little wiser," she declared, inspiring the audience.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere celebrated the event on X, stating, "The She-Wolf made history in Rio," referencing Shakira's popular 2009 song.

Felipe Maia, an ethnomusicologist, noted that Shakira established a strong connection with the Brazilian public early in her career. Her Colombian heritage shares cultural similarities with Brazil, contributing to her enduring popularity.

Erica Monteiro, a long-time fan, expressed her admiration for Shakira, stating, "For me she represents the strength of our Latino community... We’re treated as if we were inferior but in fact we have much more strength."

Hellem Souza da Silva highlighted the concert's role in solidifying Brazil's Latino identity, alongside performances like Bad Bunny's shows in Sao Paulo. These artists "are making it clear that Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia and other countries are part of Latin America. And that America is not the United States," she said.

Fans began gathering on the beach early Saturday morning to secure prime viewing spots. Street vendors offered refreshments, snacks, and even practical items like toilet paper and deodorant.

Simone Paula da Cunha, a street vendor, arrived the evening before, hoping to capitalize on the large crowd. She expressed her excitement about seeing Shakira live, recalling her early days in the music scene.

The free concert initiative is part of the City Hall's strategy to stimulate economic activity following major events like Carnival and New Year's Eve.

Mayor Cavaliere emphasized the economic benefits of such events, stating, "For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city... Our investment in this show will give us a financial return 40 times greater."

City Hall estimates that Shakira's performance could generate around 777 million reais (approximately $155 million) due to increased tourism and spending in the local economy.

Airbnb reported a surge in bookings from various parts of Brazil, Latin America, and Europe in anticipation of the concert.

Wanderson Andrade traveled from Goiana specifically for the show, fulfilling a long-held dream. "I tried to get tickets to see her in Brazil last year but I didn’t succeed," he said. "Today is a dream come true."
