Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Courtside Appearance Gets Awkward Commentary at NBA Playoffs
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's appearance at the NBA Eastern Conference Finals sparked a bizarre broadcast moment as commentators avoided mentioning Swift's name, leading to online backlash.

Taylor Swift made a splash at Game 3 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday (May 23), joining fiancé Travis Kelce as the Cleveland Cavaliers hosted the New York Knicks at Rocket Arena. The appearance led to one of the more perplexing broadcast moments of the NBA playoffs.
Swift and Kelce, who announced their engagement last August, were shown during the ESPN on ABC broadcast in the first quarter. Announcer Mike Breen acknowledged the pair as “Travis Kelce and his fiancée,” while analyst Richard Jefferson referred to them as “Travis and his girlfriend.”
Analyst Tim Legler added to the confusion by expressing ignorance about the engagement, asking who was getting married after Jefferson mentioned being invited to the wedding.
The broadcast team notably avoided mentioning Swift’s name, despite her being shown multiple times. This decision quickly drew backlash online.

The omission is particularly odd given Swift’s immense popularity. Her album The Life of a Showgirl debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in October 2025 with a modern-era record of 4 million equivalent album units.
The album spent 12 weeks at No. 1, topped the 2025 year-end Billboard 200, and made Swift the first act since Elton John to top the year-end chart in back-to-back years with different titles. She holds 15 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, the most among soloists, and leads the American Music Awards with eight nominations.
Whether the broadcast's choice was a deliberate act or an oversight remains unclear. In December 2023, Tony Romo mistakenly called her “Kelce’s wife” during a CBS Chiefs broadcast, showing this isn't the first time broadcasters have stumbled.
The Cavaliers had humorously warned attendees to wear playoff T-shirts, a rule neither Swift nor Kelce followed.
The Knicks lead the series 2-0. Kelce, an Ohio native, was seen enthusiastically supporting his hometown team and even chugging a beer to the crowd's delight.
