An Austrian man, identified as Beran A. in official proceedings, apologized for his actions in an Austrian court on Thursday (May 28), ahead of a verdict in his trial for planning an attack on a Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert in Vienna in August 2024.

According to the Associated Press, Beran A. faces serious charges, including terrorist offenses and membership in a terrorist organization, which could lead to a 20-year prison sentence.

“I would like to say that I’m sorry,” Beran A. stated briefly before the court adjourned to deliberate.

His defense attorney confirmed that he pleaded guilty to the charges during the trial's opening day last month. The planned bombing was thwarted by authorities, who subsequently canceled all three of Swift’s scheduled performances in the city on August 8, 9, and 10 as a precaution.

Prosecutors allege that Beran A. intended to target attendees outside Ernst Happel Stadium with knives and homemade explosives. The venue has a capacity of 65,000, and authorities anticipated over 200,000 fans would visit Vienna during the three concert dates.

Beran A. allegedly communicated with other members of the Islamic State group before the planned attack, discussing weapons procurement and bomb construction. He also reportedly attempted to illegally purchase weapons while pledging allegiance to the militant group.

The CIA revealed that the suspect aimed to inflict mass casualties. Intelligence helped disrupt the planning, leading to three arrests. A raid on Beran A.'s residence uncovered chemical substances and technical devices intended for the attack.

Beran A. is being tried alongside Arda K., and a third man detained in Saudi Arabia, for allegedly planning simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024. Beran A. pleaded not guilty to the charges related to these simultaneous attack plots.

During closing arguments at the state court in Wiener Neustadt, prosecutors urged for the men’s conviction. Beran A.’s defense lawyer argued that her client was “not an ideological mastermind.”

The Swift’s Vienna shows were scheduled as part of the Eras Tour’s European leg, preceding a five-night residency at London’s Wembley Stadium (August 15-20), which proceeded without incident. Swift addressed the terror plot, stating, “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows... I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London. My team and I worked hand in hand with stadium staff and British authorities every day in pursuit of that goal, and I want to thank them for everything they did for us.”

Following the cancellation, disappointed fans gathered in Vienna for impromptu sing-alongs and celebrations of Swift.
