The Mountain Goats Announce 'Days' Album and Tour, Drop New Single 'Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds'

Fresh off the heels of Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan, The Mountain Goats have announced their new album, Days. The record promises a deep dive into the accumulation of memories and experiences, filtered through the band's signature blend of poignant storytelling and musical craftsmanship.

Leading the charge is the quirky and intriguing single, “Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds.” This track, alongside other colorfully titled songs like “Best Hard Rock Albums 2013” and “Hidden Majesty of Later Venom Albums,” offers a glimpse into the album's thematic exploration.

According to John Darnielle, the album initially began as Grunges, a sequel to their acclaimed 2017 LP Goths. The inspiration struck after a joke on social media about writing a song called “Contemplating Pearl Jam in the Carolina Dawn.” Darnielle elaborates on the album's core, stating, “These songs are loosely about the 70s, 80s, and 90s, which is to say they’re about the accumulation of days, each one a little further back than the next, sometimes miraculously seeming clearer as they recede and sometimes blurring into unrecognizable shapes which are sometimes pleasant and sometimes troubling. Most songs here are in major keys but don’t let that fool you."

Days was produced by John Congleton and recorded at Sear Sound in Manhattan. The lineup features Darnielle, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster. Notably, Peter Hughes departed in 2024 after an impressive 30-year tenure with the band. The album also includes contributions from Rob Jost (bass, French horn), Mikaela Davis (harp), and various backing vocalists.
