U2's visit to Mexico City took an unexpected turn on Thursday, May 14th, as Bono and The Edge joined Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum at the General Assembly of the Street Child World Cup. The event, held in the Mexican capital, champions social inclusion and children’s rights.

President Sheinbaum addressed young participants at the Hidalgo Theater of the Mexican Social Security Institute. The U2 frontman and guitarist accompanied her, as revealed in videos shared by Mexico City’s Secretary of Tourism, Alejandra Frausto.

Onstage, the head of state and the two band members greeted the audience. "My president," Bono remarked to Sheinbaum, followed by a warm embrace, eliciting enthusiastic applause from the attendees.

Sheinbaum later shared a video showcasing their interaction. "Hello, nice to meet you," she said to the pair in English.

"Nice to meet you, such a fan of yours," The Edge responded. Bono added, "My goodness, universal healthcare, you have raised the minimum wage, you come to the Street Child World Cup, you meet The Edge and myself. I don’t know how you have time."

Mexico City hosted the 2026 Street Child World Cup, gathering 30 teams globally from May 6-14. Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. stated on U2’s website, "It’s a little NGO with a big kick for kids with all of the talent and none of the access. Our band are proud supporters."

The Rock Hall-inducted band, including bassist Adam Clayton, returned to Mexico after nine years to film the music video for "Street of Dreams," from their upcoming album due in late 2026. The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, formally invited them to perform at the iconic Zócalo, the country’s main public square.

Mexico holds a special place for U2. Memorable concerts include the 1997 Popmart: Live From Mexico City. Their last performance in the capital was in October 2017, three weeks after the earthquake, marking the 30th anniversary of The Joshua Tree.
