Visible Cloaks, the Portland-based ambient duo of Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile, are set to release their first full-length album in nine years, Paradessence, on May 22 via RVNG Intl.
The duo has also shared "Disque," the lead single from the album. The track features Motion Graphics playing synthetic woodwinds, accompanied by a captivating music video.
Prior to this, Visible Cloaks released serenitatem, a collaborative album with ambient artists Yoshio Ojima and Satsuki Shibano, in 2019. Their last solo LP, Reassemblage, came out in 2017, followed by the mini-LP Lex the same year. Spencer Doran also curated the Grammy-nominated compilation Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990 in 2019.
Paradessence derives its title from a portmanteau coined by author Alex Shakar, blending "paradoxical" and "essence." According to Visible Cloaks, this word encapsulates the oppositional yet coexisting concepts they aim to explore throughout the new album.
"Instead of creating pieces that function horizontally as environments, we wanted to conceptualize them as living material changing in space, continually in flux," Doran explained in a press statement.
