Britney Spears Faces DUI Charge: Prosecutors Offer "Wet Reckless" Plea
Pop icon Britney Spears is facing a DUI charge in California following her arrest in March. Prosecutors are offering a "wet reckless" plea deal, common in cases with no prior DUI history, low blood alcohol level, and no accident or injury.

Following her arrest in March, Britney Spears is officially facing a criminal charge for allegedly driving under the influence.
On Thursday, April 30, prosecutors in Ventura County, California, formally charged Spears with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence. Her arraignment is scheduled for Monday, May 4, at 9 a.m. PT. Spears is not required to attend in person; her attorney can appear on her behalf.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office stated that they plan to offer Spears a “wet reckless” plea deal. This type of agreement is typically offered to individuals with no prior DUIs, a low blood alcohol level, and where no accident or injury occurred.
The DA’s office noted that this resolution is “common, particularly when a defendant demonstrates self-motivation to address underlying issues” through rehab or treatment. Spears voluntarily checked into a rehab facility earlier this month.
If Spears accepts the deal, she will plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs. The likely punishment includes 12 months of probation, fines, completion of a DUI class, and credit for any time spent in custody.
A representative for Spears has not yet commented on the situation.
Police officers pulled Spears over in March after receiving reports of a BMW “driving erratically at a high rate of speed,” according to a California Highway Patrol spokesperson. Officers stated that Spears “showed signs of impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests,” leading to her arrest. She was booked around 3 a.m. and released shortly after 6 a.m.
At the time of the incident, a rep for Spears stated, “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
