Broken Social Scene Reunites with David Newfeld for First Album in Decade

Canadian indie rock collective Broken Social Scene is making a highly anticipated return this spring. The Toronto-based band has announced their sixth studio album, Remember the Humans, set to release on May 8 via Arts and Crafts. This marks their first full-length album in almost ten years, and the initial single, “Not Around Anymore,” suggests a continuation of their signature blend of woozy affirmation and shambolic joy.

Remember the Humans boasts a lineup of familiar faces from the Broken Social Scene universe. This includes singer Kevin Drew, guitarists Charles Spearin, Brendan Canning, Sam Goldberg, Andrew Whiteman, and Jimmy Shaw, drummer Justin Peroff, trombonist Evan Cranley, and vocal contributions from Feist, Amy Millan, Lisa Lobsinger, Ariel Engle, and Hannah Georgas. It's a true reunion of the Broken Social Scene ensemble.

The most notable name for longtime fans is producer David Newfeld. He played a crucial role in shaping the band's sound on their acclaimed albums, 2002's You Forgot It in People and 2005's Broken Social Scene. This reunion with Newfeld signals a return to the overstuffed, transcendent rock sound that defined Broken Social Scene in the 2000s.

According to a press release, Newfeld and Drew reconnected after many years, bonding over the shared experience of losing their mothers during the album's creation. Newfeld stated, "Our moms would have wanted us to do this, and get it right after 20 years of not working together."

Broken Social Scene's last full-length album was 2017's Hug of Thunder, followed by a pair of EPs in 2019. In an interview with Rolling Stone around the release of those EPs, Drew hinted at a future album with a more mellow and roots-oriented approach. It appears that vision is now coming to fruition.

The band has also announced the All the Feelings Tour, a summer tour alongside Metric and Stars, promising “a celebration of lifelong friendship and creative communion amongst the Toronto legends.” The tour kicks off in Austin, Texas, in early June and concludes two months later in Ontario.
