Chaka Khan Throws Shade? Singer Suggests Some Pop Stars Overcompensate with 'Butts and Stuff'

Chaka Khan is making headlines again, this time for her candid thoughts on the current state of pop music. The legendary singer suggested that some of today's biggest stars might be relying too heavily on their image and stage antics to make up for vocal shortcomings.

During an appearance on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast, the conversation turned to a previous interview Khan did with Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills on The Breakfast Club.

Ware referenced LaBelle and Mills' comments about prioritizing genuine singing over theatrics and visual distractions. She then asked Khan if she felt the demands on female performers had changed or if this pressure had always existed.

Khan responded that "the game has changed because all bets are off," elaborating, "These women are doing any and every damn thing on stage and trying to sing, too. And the ones who are doing the most physicalities, with their butts and stuff, and their body parts, are the ones that usually are compensating for what they don’t have."

Ware's mother, Lennie, chimed in, setting up Khan to say that those performers may be lacking the most important thing: "[Have the] voice. Absolutely. I came to sing, and I came to really do a good job, and that’s hard work. I don’t feel like it’s hard work once I’m doing it. I feel great.”

You can watch the full discussion in the Table Manners podcast episode, starting around the 21-minute mark.

Khan, LaBelle, Mills, and Gladys Knight are set to continue their 'The Queens: 4 Legends, 1 Stage' tour in May, hitting cities like New Orleans and Houston. Tickets are available here.

In other news, Khan was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award on January 31, alongside Paul Simon and Cher. Whitney Houston and Fela Kuti received posthumous honors.

Last September, Khan surprised fans by joining Dua Lipa on her 'Radical Optimism' tour in Chicago to perform her iconic hit, 'Ain’t Nobody'.

Her music has also been featured on several soundtracks, including 'Cross', 'Wonder Man', and 'Ironheart'.
