Charlie Puth is having a moment. Fresh off becoming a dad and performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium, his fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever!, is out today via Atlantic Records.
"I had to take a closer look at myself to make this record and sing about things I normally wouldn’t sing about,” he says. “Audiences knew my music more than they knew me because I never really gave them a chance to know me. This is the chance."
Puth aimed to create “a rich, warm, and big-sounding record.” BloodPop joined as co-producer, pushing Puth to explore new sonic territories and lyrical themes.
The album boasts impressive collaborations, including Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins on the yacht rock-inspired “Love In Exile,” actor Jeff Goldblum on “Until It Happens To You,” plus Kenny G (“Cry”), Ravyn Lenae (“New Jersey”) and Hikaru Utada “(Home”).
Puth recently showcased “Sideways,” an album cut, on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Coco Jones.
His WHATEVER’S CLEVER! World Tour kicks off April 22 at San Diego’s Viejas Arena, followed by European dates in June and July.
With over 35 billion career streams, nine multi-platinum singles, four Grammy nominations, and three Billboard Music Awards, Puth's impact is undeniable. His contribution to Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks, and he has secured three top 10 spots on the Billboard 200, including his 2022 album, Charlie.
“What’s funny is I don’t consider any of these 12 songs to be clever, I consider them to be real,” Puth told Tomás Mier. He describes Whatever’s Clever! as “inherently jazzy” and “incredibly honest.”
