Earth, Wind & Fire: Questlove's HBO Doc Unearths the Soul of a Legend

The legendary R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire is getting the documentary treatment courtesy of Questlove, and HBO has just dropped the first trailer.

Earth, Wind & Fire: To Be Celestial Vs. That’s the Weight of the World sees Ahmed “Questlove” Thompson diving deep into the band’s history, charting their rise from the hit-making Seventies to their present-day status. The film also explores the artistic evolution of the band's late founder, Maurice White.

The documentary boasts an impressive lineup of interviewees, including members Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson, alongside luminaries such as President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, H.E.R., and Flea.

According to HBO, the film utilizes the band’s extensive visual, audio, and written archives, including never-before-seen footage, to create an immersive experience. Viewers will be transported to the electrifying live performances that have captivated fans for decades.

The film explores Earth, Wind & Fire's genre-bending journey from jazz to soul, R&B, Afro-funk, and disco. It also highlights White’s incorporation of spiritual, metaphysical, and astrological themes into the band’s songwriting and theatrical live shows, all in an effort to unite a diverse audience.

Following its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next month, Earth, Wind & Fire: To Be Celestial Vs. That’s the Weight of the World will air on HBO on June 7.
