Foo Fighters and Taylor Momsen Unleash Mariah Carey's Grunge Secret at MusiCares Tribute
Foo Fighters and Taylor Momsen team up to cover songs from Mariah Carey's '90s grunge album at the MusiCares Person of the Year benefit show, offering a rare glimpse into Carey's alternative rock project.

Foo Fighters and Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless recently joined forces to cover songs from Mariah Carey’s long-lost ‘90s grunge album, offering a surprising twist at a recent tribute show. Footage of the performance has surfaced, exciting fans with this unexpected collaboration.
The existence of this mysterious album first surfaced in Carey's 2020 memoir, The Making Of Mariah Carey. She revealed her vocal contributions to ‘Someone’s Ugly Daughter’ by the alt-rock band Chick, influenced by bands like Sleater-Kinney and L7. However, the 1995 release didn't feature Carey’s vocals.
Carey was honored at the MusiCares Person Of The Year benefit at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Among tributes from other artists, Foo Fighters and Momsen delivered renditions of tracks from ‘Someone’s Ugly Daughter’, giving these songs a rare public airing.
The set included ‘Love Is A Scam’ and ‘Demented’. The night also featured performances from Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Kesha, Billy Porter, Laufey, Charlie Puth, Teddy Swims, Maggie Rogers, and Adam Lambert.

Carey has hinted at releasing the full album, stating in 2024 that she was “so mad I haven’t [released it] yet”.
Last year, she told Jimmy Fallon she was unsure who owned the master recordings, suggesting previous attempts to release the album were blocked by Sony.
Describing the project in her memoir, Carey said, “I’d bring my little alt-rock song to the band and hum a silly guitar riff. They would pick it up and we would record it immediately. It was irreverent, raw, and urgent, and the band got into it. I actually started to love some of the songs. I would fully commit to my character.”
She added, “I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time. You know the ones who seemed to be so carefree with their feelings and their image...I wanted to break free, let loose, and express my misery – but I also wanted to laugh."
On the Foo Fighters front, Dave Grohl revealed in Australia that the band recently finished their new album, their first since 2023’s ‘But Here We Are’. Last year saw the release of new singles ‘Today’s Song’ and ‘Asking For A Friend’.
The Pretty Reckless released ‘For I Am Death’ last August, marking their first new music in four years.
