The British virtual band Gorillaz made their Saturday Night Live debut by performing a song from their first album, Gorillaz, and their most recent album, The Mountain.

They opened with “Clint Eastwood,” the iconic lead single from their self-titled 2001 album. Rolling Stone previously ranked the song at number 38 on the 100 best songs of the 2000s, noting its similarity to the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Del the Funky Homosapien, who provided the rap verses, joined the group on stage, igniting the crowd with his signature flow.

Gorillaz then transitioned to “The Moon Cave” from The Mountain, their follow-up to 2023’s Cracker Island. The performance was enriched by the presence of singer-songwriter Asha Puthli, rapper Black Thought, and sitar player Anoushka Shankar, creating a vibrant tapestry of sound.

Each of the fifteen tracks on The Mountain features at least one collaborator, with some appearances being posthumous. “The Moon Cave,” for example, includes contributions from the late guitarist and singer Bobby Womack and Dave Jolicoeur of De La Soul.

"I just thought, if we’re going to talk about the subject of death, I need some people who are dead to help me talk about it,” Damon Albarn told Rolling Stone last month in an interview alongside co-creator Jamie Hewlett.

The album was shaped by personal losses and a transformative trip to India, incorporating Indian classical instrumentation and lyrics in multiple languages, including Hindi. Other notable tracks include “The Manifesto” and “Damascus.”

Gorillaz's The Mountain tour kicks off later this month in the U.K. The group is also set to headline Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival in June and Atlanta’s Shaky Knees festival in September.
