Green Day ignited Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, CA, with a performance charged with their signature punk energy and subtle political undertones. The East Bay punk band's booking had previously drawn criticism from President Donald Trump, who had already expressed his displeasure with Bad Bunny headlining the Halftime Show.
Green Day has a long history of speaking out against Trump. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has famously altered the lyrics of their 2004 hit "American Idiot" during live performances to reflect his opposition to the MAGA agenda. Back in 2016, Armstrong even compared the president to Adolf Hitler in an NME interview.
Armstrong's sentiments were further amplified at a FanDuel and Spotify pre-game gig in San Francisco, where he directed a pointed message to ICE agents, urging them to quit their jobs and criticizing figures like Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, JD Vance, and Donald Trump. He also dedicated "Holiday" to Minneapolis, altering a lyric to reference Epstein Island.
At Levi's Stadium, Green Day's six-minute set included their Bush-era indictment "American Idiot," which was bleeped during the line "subliminal mindfuck America." The set also featured snippets of "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)," "Holiday," and "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams."
Before Green Day's performance, Coco Jones delivered a rendition of “Lift Every Voice And Sing," a tradition added to Super Bowl programming in 2020. Following Green Day, Brandi Carlile performed "America The Beautiful," and Charlie Puth, accompanied by Kenny G, presented the national anthem, with Puth dedicating his arrangement to honoring Whitney Houston.
