The iconic post-punk revivalists Interpol are gearing up for a triumphant return, announcing their highly anticipated new album, This Mirror Weighs a Ton. Set to drop on August 28, the record marks a new chapter for the band as they join forces with Partisan Records.
Accompanying the announcement, fans have been treated to two compelling new tracks: the evocative title track, "This Mirror Weighs a Ton," and the expansive "See Out Loud."
A notable highlight on the new material sees guitarist Daniel Kessler stepping up to the mic for vocal duties on "See Out Loud," a rare occurrence since his contribution to "PDA" on their seminal debut, Turn on the Bright Lights. This promises an intriguing new layer to the band's sonic landscape.
The album was meticulously crafted at Andrew Wyatt's Manhattan studio, with Wyatt himself taking on production duties. The final mix was then finessed by the legendary David Fridmann, known for his work with a pantheon of alternative artists.
Kessler shared his excitement about the creative process behind the title track: “I was right next to Andrew [Wyatt] when he started doing these incredible things with the sound design, and it was just so exciting. I remember thinking, I don’t have context for what kind of music this is—these big crashes happening before Paul even had a vocal. Logic would have said maybe this is an instrumental. Then Paul just got up, went into the back room and started singing those melodies—and suddenly it was clearly not going to be.” This glimpse into the studio magic underscores the collaborative spirit and spontaneous evolution of their sound alongside frontman Paul Banks.
This Mirror Weighs a Ton follows their critically acclaimed 2022 release, The Other Side of Make-Believe. The album artwork, a striking piece by Addie Wagenknecht, perfectly encapsulates the record's enigmatic atmosphere.
Fans will have the chance to experience the new material live as Interpol has plotted a significant North American tour, kicking off at the end of July. Prepare for a compelling journey through their latest sonic explorations.
