Jeff Buckley's 'Lover, You Should’ve Come Over' Enters Billboard Hot 100 Nearly 30 Years After His Death
Jeff Buckley's haunting ballad, 'Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,' from his debut album Grace, posthumously charts on the Billboard Hot 100, fueled by streaming and TikTok virality.

Nearly three decades after his tragic passing, Jeff Buckley's exquisite song, “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,” has made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song, a standout track from the singer-songwriter’s legendary debut album, Grace, released in 1994, reached Number 97 on the chart on January 31, according to Billboard.
Billboard attributes the song's arrival on the chart to “almost entirely from its streaming sum” of 3.8 million official U.S. streams during the Jan. 16-22 tracking week, citing Luminate. The outlet also noted the significant role of social media platforms like TikTok, where snippets of the song have been widely used in videos, driving its resurgence over the past year.
“Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” initially appeared on the Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart in April 2023, peaking at Number 22. It returned to the chart in July, coinciding with the release of Amy Berg’s documentary, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, and has remained on the chart since, reaching Number 12.
Buckley penned the song about his dissolving relationship with Rebecca Moore, whom he met at a tribute concert for his late father, folk singer Tim Buckley. In a July 1995 performance in Italy, Buckley shared, “I wrote this song while lying listening to the telephone in my apartment. But she never called.”
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, pays tribute to the young singer-songwriter who died in 1997 and his too-short career. Buckley was just 30 and had been working on his second studio album at the time of his accidental drowning in a Tennessee river.
