Remembering Andy Kershaw: Radio 1 Legend and Champion of World Music Dies at 66
Tributes pour in for broadcasting icon Andy Kershaw, the legendary Radio 1 DJ and champion of world music, who passed away at the age of 66 after battling cancer.

The world of music broadcasting is mourning the loss of Andy Kershaw, a true icon who died at the age of 66. News of his passing follows a recent announcement in January that he was diagnosed with cancer, which had left him unable to walk. His family confirmed that he died at approximately 7:30 PM last night (Thursday, April 16th).
Born in Rochdale in 1959, Kershaw's journey began at Leeds University, leading to his early broadcasting career at Radio Aire in the 1980s. His big break came in 1984 when he became a presenter on BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test.

In 1985, he was selected as one of the BBC presenters covering Live Aid. His impactful work extended to reporting on the 1994 Rwanda genocide and the final stages of the Sierra Leone civil war in 2001. Notably, he also created radio diaries from North Korea, considered among the first programs ever recorded from the nation, according to The Guardian.
Joining Radio 1 in 1985, Kershaw remained a fixture for 15 years, often seen as the heir to John Peel's legacy. His eclectic taste and dedication to showcasing both UK talent and lesser-known non-western artists set him apart.
After his late-night Radio 1 show concluded in 2000, he continued his career with BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3.
Sad news. Andy Kershaw: one of those DJs you knew actually did love music, has died. Big fan of my favourite band #HMHB. Go and revive your matey DJ chat with Peely.

Such very sad news. Saw him at the Edinburgh Fringe talking about his book, No Off Switch. He was so enthusiastic and could have talked for hours. Loved the book too. He will be missed with all his vast music knowledge. RIP
