Robert Plant on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
Robert Plant and his band Saving Grace graced the stage of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, delivering a captivating performance of Led Zeppelin’s timeless 1969 hit, “Ramble On.” The legendary frontman also presented a roots-infused rendition of “Higher Rock” from their 2025 album Saving Grace. The appearance was further enriched by a pre-show interview with Colbert.
The interview, recorded prior to the show, saw the two personalities delve into the nuances of traditional folk music. Plant shared his aversion to sea shanties and explored the contrasting elements between English and American music. "What I like about the American thing is it’s a lot more bloodthirsty and there’s a lot more treachery. It’s broken hearts, love doesn’t work quite so well," Plant noted, highlighting the distinct narratives woven into American musical traditions.
Choosing “Ramble On” proved particularly fitting, given its lyrical inspiration from The Lord of the Rings. Colbert's well-known affinity for J.R.R. Tolkien even extends to helming a new movie based on the books. Last year, Plant and Colbert bonded over their shared passion for Tolkien’s works on the show.
Saving Grace was formed by Plant in 2019, initially playing in small English theaters. Their debut album, Saving Grace, was primarily recorded outdoors. They toured the United States last fall. Plant also performed at the Big Ears music festival in March. In 2021, he collaborated with Alison Krauss on the acclaimed album Raise the Roof.
