The Great Escape festival has issued a statement following the tragic deaths of three women in the sea off the coast of Brighton.

The festival, a celebration of new music, began today, Wednesday, May 13th, with one of its showcase events being the opening beach party presented by NME, headlined by Angine De Poitrine.

Ahead of the performance, the festival shared an update with ticketholders, reassuring them that events would proceed safely as scheduled despite the tragic events on Brighton beach overnight.

The bodies of three women were recovered from the sea near Madeira Drive this morning after emergency services were called around 5:45 am. Despite the efforts of ambulance crews and paramedics, the women were pronounced dead at the scene.

In their statement, The Great Escape extended their deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.

They also thanked the emergency services, adding that Brighton beach is a large public area and that the section occupied by The Great Escape festival site has not been affected by the incident.

Festival operations and scheduled performances will continue as planned, following guidance from the relevant authorities.

At a news conference, Sussex Police Chief Superintendent Adam Hays stated that the incident was tragic and in its early stages of enquiry. The priority is to identify the three women and contact their next of kin.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Great Escape, running until May 16th. Over 450 up-and-coming artists will perform across 35 venues in the city. The full lineup is available via the official mobile app.

NME is hosting its own stage at the festival, located at The Old Market on Friday, May 15th. French/Mancunian noiseniks Mandy, Indiana and Swedish garage rockers Girl Scout top the bill.

The NME Stage line-up is rounded out by NYC alt-pop trio Chanpan and Aussie indie five-piece Any Young Mechanics.

NME will also present the NME 100 Gig Guide: The Great Escape Edition – a guide to seeing artists from the NME 100, their annual list of essential emerging artists, playing live in Brighton.
