Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan's Songbook Celebrated in New Compilation Featuring Springsteen, Cash, and More
A star-studded compilation album, 'Where the Willow and the Dogwood Grow,' will feature covers of Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan's songs by artists like Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson. Out May 29th via Ace Records.
Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan are about to receive a high honor: some of music's most respected artists covering their work. Ace Records is releasing Where the Willow and the Dogwood Grow, a compilation album dropping on May 29th, that features an impressive roster of musicians interpreting the duo's unique songbook. Among the featured artists are Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, the legendary Johnny Cash, and even the Ramones.
Where the Willow and the Dogwood boasts 19 carefully selected covers, with many choices approved by Waits and Brennan themselves. The tracklist includes contributions from Joan Baez, Bob Seger, Marianne Faithfull, Solomon Burke, Norah Jones, Lucinda Williams, Bettye LaVette, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, Los Lobos, Diana Krall, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Madison Cunningham, King Ernest, John Hammond, and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.
Brennan, Waits' longtime collaborator, producer, and wife, is often credited for influencing his experimental musical direction. Waits himself acknowledged her crucial role in an interview with The Guardian: "She rescued me... Everybody knows she’s the brains behind Pa... She’s the one who’s steering the ship."
