Zara Larsson Defends Chappell Roan: 'People Freak Out When Women Have Boundaries'
Zara Larsson voices her support for Chappell Roan, addressing the sexism she believes underlies the criticism Roan faces for setting boundaries with fans.

Zara Larsson's admiration for Chappell Roan continues to grow. As she told The Guardian, she could chart her increasing affection with a simple equation: "The more people hate her, the more I love her." However, she added, "I don’t like how she’s being treated at all."
Roan has faced public scrutiny several times since rising to fame. Her 2024 statement defining boundaries between her public persona and private life was met with criticism by some fans. She firmly stated, "What I do not accept are creepy people, being touched, and being followed."
Larsson believes the contempt directed at Roan stems from sexism. "When a woman has boundaries, I think people freak out," she said. "Men can do violent criminal things and people applaud them, but when a woman says, ‘Stop following me,’ it’s controversial? It’s like, you guys just hate women, actually."

Roan recently faced scrutiny when Brazilian soccer player Jorginho claimed she had directed a security guard to aggressively chastise his wife and stepdaughter for smiling at her. The guard allegedly told the mother that she "shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people.” However, this turned out to be a misunderstanding.
Roan clarified in a video that she had never seen the mother or daughter. "Like, no one came up to me, no one bothered me," she said. She added, "I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. … If you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that."
The security guard, Pascal Duvier, who was not employed by Roan, took responsibility for the incident. "I take full responsibility for the interactions on March 21st," he stated. "I was at the hotel on behalf of another individual, and I was not part of the personal security team of Chappell Roan. The actions I took were not on behalf of Chappell Roan, her personal security team, her management, or any other individuals." Ultimately, Roan and the stepdaughter were the ones most affected by the situation.
Larsson told The Guardian she feels ready for megafame. "I kind of thrive on attention in all forms," said the singer, who released Midnight Sun last year and enjoys updating her Wikipedia photo.
