Jay-Z Unleashes Fiery Freestyle at Roots Picnic, Seemingly Targeting Drake, Ye, and Nicki Minaj

Jay-Z electrified the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on Saturday, headlining the event with a surprise a cappella freestyle that has the internet buzzing. This marked his first headlining performance in over five years, and he didn't hold back, delivering a 32-song setlist packed with hits and pointed lyrical jabs.

Just minutes into his set, Jay-Z launched into a four-minute freestyle following "Hovi Baby." The lyrics appeared to directly address Drake, referencing the Iceman track “Janice STFU.” Jay-Z retorted, "The jig is up/We got up 10/wrong chart champ/You gotta look up again/N—s look up to Hov/I never looked up to them." He didn't stop there, adding, "Them crackers got your publishing gangsta, go talk tough to them, don’t talk success to me," and "You n—-s is workers, in perpetuity is how your contract is worded/Don’t make me go further, man.”

Regarding Ye, formerly Kanye West, Jay-Z's bars seemed to address previous derogatory comments about his and Beyoncé's children. He rapped, "You ever heard of wonder-kin? My children are some of them," and "Have you n—-s have no shame? You trying to get under skin? I’ll really get under skin.” Despite the pointed lyrics, Jay-Z still performed tracks from their collaborative album, Watch the Throne, including “No Church in the Wild,” “Gotta Have It,” and “N—-s in Paris,” according to Setlist.fm.

He also appeared to target Nicki Minaj, rapping, “That lady back on that stuff/She sounds like she’s in love with ’em/Her Ken can’t even pick they kid, enough of them.”

The freestyle arrives shortly after Jay-Z's recent comments on the Kendrick Lamar-Drake feud in an interview with GQ, where he suggested that “this is taking us a couple steps back” and questioned if battling still needs to be part of the culture. He acknowledged the potential hypocrisy of his stance, given his own history with rap battles, a point underscored by this recent freestyle.

Backed by The Roots, Jay-Z's set also featured a star-studded lineup of guests, including Meek Mill, Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal, and a reunited State Property.

This Roots Picnic performance precedes Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint anniversary shows at Yankee Stadium in New York on July 10 and 11. anniversary shows.
