Lana Del Rey Unveils 'First Light': A Haunting Theme for New James Bond Game

Lana Del Rey has unveiled her captivating new track, ‘First Light,’ which will serve as the theme for the highly anticipated James Bond video game, 007: First Light.

007: First Light, developed by Hitman creators IO Interactive, presents an original origin story for the iconic 007. Patrick Gibson takes on the role of James Bond, accompanied by a stellar cast including Lenny Kravitz as Bawma The Pirate King, Priyanga Burford as M, Alastair Mackenzie as Q, Kiera Lester as Miss Moneypenny, Noemie Nakia as Miss Roth, and Lennie James as John Greenway.

The game is slated for release next month, May 27th, on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 version has been pushed back to later this year.

Today, April 16th, Lana Del Rey officially released ‘First Light,’ the Bond theme song for 007: First Light. The track is a collaboration with veteran Bond composer David Arnold (Casino Royale, Tomorrow Never Dies).

“It’s a joy to watch two extraordinary talents like Lana Del Rey and David Arnold combine forces; the result feels instantly ‘Bond’ while still bringing a fresh identity for 007: First Light,” stated IO Interactive boss Hakan Abrak. “Bond’s return to gaming is a landmark moment for us at IO Interactive, and having a title song of this quality makes it even more special.”

David Arnold added, “The music of James Bond has always been a huge part of its identity. A title song has to tell us about the world we are about to enter into. It has to intrigue, excite, and beckon us in. This song joins a long line of genre defining songs, each one creating a benchmark of style that adds to the magnificent heritage that is ‘The Bond Song.’ That’s why I was so excited to work with Lana, an artist who brought elegance, atmosphere, and her totally unique character to this piece, which I hope will open the world of Bond to a whole new audience.”

In 2024, Lana Del Rey revealed that she had previously written a Bond theme for 2015’s Spectre, but the nod went to Sam Smith’s ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ instead. Reflecting on the prospect of creating a Bond theme, she said in an interview with the BBC, “How has it not happened yet? One day maybe. But I’m going to continue to do my little Nancy Sinatra thing every now and then and just pretend that it’s the title track.” Radiohead also pitched a song for the Spectre soundtrack before releasing the song for free.

Rumors of Del Rey’s involvement in the new game surfaced last year when a new song, ‘First Light,’ was registered with the American Society Of Composers, Authors And Publishers.

It has also been confirmed that Superstar DJ Dimitri Vegas will be part of the First Light cast, while his ravey remix of the iconic Bond theme will also be included in the game’s soundtrack.

Lana Del Rey is set to release her new album ‘Stove’ later this year. The record was originally called ‘Lasso’ then ‘The Right Person Will Stay’ and had been due to be released in 2025 before Del Rey delayed it to add more songs. So far, three singles have been shared from ‘Stove’ – ‘Henry, Come On’, ‘Bluebird’ and ‘White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter.

Speaking to NME in 2024, Del Rey said ‘Lasso’s lyrics would reflect her more comfortable, “playful” approach to music. “I’ve maybe less to say in terms of any self-revealing things like on ‘Tunnel’ or ‘Blue Bannisters’ or ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’, and just more melodic. Maybe more American Songbook style?”

In other news, Laufey has teamed up with Fortnite to bring her recent ‘A Matter Of Time’ arena tour to the game’s Festival mode.
