The Swedish company Pophouse Entertainment, renowned for creating avatars of ABBA and Kiss, has made a significant acquisition: the rights to Tina Turner's name, image, and likeness, according to The Associated Press. In addition to this, they've also secured a majority stake in the rights to Turner’s music catalog from BMG. The financial details of this acquisition remain undisclosed.
Jessica Koravos, CEO of Pophouse, expressed the company's interest in Turner, who passed away in 2023, citing her "incredible visual presence and such an incredible stage energy." Pophouse, known for its expertise in digital avatars and immersive experiences, is exploring projects aimed at portraying and recreating that energy to some degree.
The ultimate goal, according to Koravos, is to "consolidate [Turner’s] legacy." While she stopped short of confirming the creation of a Turner avatar, she hinted at an upcoming announcement regarding the company's plans within the next six months.
It was noted that Turner’s estate was informed and involved in the discussions, although not a direct party to the transaction.
Alistair Norbury, president of BMG U.K., Continental Europe and APAC, stated that BMG's responsibility, along with Pophouse and the estate, is to ensure her work continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, while remaining true to the strength, independence, and originality that defined her career. BMG will retain an undisclosed percentage of Turner’s catalog.
Pophouse, known for their work on the ABBA Voyage show in 2021, previously acquired Kiss’ catalog, brand name, and IP in a deal exceeding $300 million in 2024. The band debuted their digital avatars, created by Pophouse, at the final show of their 2023 farewell tour. These avatars are slated to headline their own show in 2027. Cyndi Lauper also partnered with Pophouse in 2024, with the company acquiring a majority share of her music rights. Furthermore, Pophouse holds the majority rights to Avicii’s music.
